These general purpose plastics have the advantages of being easy to form and affordable, but at the same time they also have the disadvantages of being susceptible to aging and deformation, which may bring some inconvenience during use. But they can be improved by modifying and adding precipitated barium sulfate to meet the needs of practical applications. Precipitated barium sulfate has become one of the widely used materials for functional modification of plastic products due to its unique and excellent properties. It can improve the chemical corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance of plastic products, and improve the appearance of products.

1. Rigidity of modified plastics:

Under normal circumstances, the stiffness of plastics is relatively low, for example, the bending modulus of pure polypropylene (PP) is about 1000 megapascals (MPa), which is difficult to meet the application needs of some parts. However, when 30% talc powder is added to it, its bending modulus can reach more than 2000 MPa, so talc powder plays a significant role in increasing the stiffness.

2. Surface hardness of modified plastics:

Under normal circumstances, plastic has a low hardness and is easy to scratch on the surface, which will affect its appearance, thereby reducing its appearance and decoration. Compared with plastic, inorganic fillers usually have a higher hardness. Therefore, when adding inorganic fillers to plastics, the surface hardness of plastics can be significantly improved.

3. Molding process ability of modified plastics:

Fillers improve the process ability of plastics, such as barium sulfate, glass beads, etc., can improve the fluidity of the resin, and then improve the process ability of modified plastic molding

4. Progress intensity:

The tensile strength of general purpose plastics is usually low, but when the appropriate amount of inorganic fillers is added, the tensile strength and bending strength of plastics can be significantly improved, thus improving the performance of plastics in engineering applications.

5. Giving plastics specific functions can increase the added value of plastics:

Some fillers can give plastic specific functions, for example, adding talcum powder and calcium carbonate to polypropylene (PP) can improve its antistatic properties and printing function; Adding insulating glass beads to plastic can improve its thermal insulation performance. Adding metal particles to plastics can improve their thermal and electrical conductivity.

6. Precipitated Barium Sulphate:

①The appearance of Precipitated Barium Sulphate is white amorphous powder, the relative density is 4.50(15 ℃), and the melting point is 1 580 ℃. Because it has a high refractive index (1.63~1.65), it shows a whiter color and has a certain hiding power. It is almost insoluble in water, ethanol and acids, and soluble in hot sulfuric acid. It can be reduced to barium sulfide with carbon at high temperatures.

As a very cost-effective filling material, barium sulfate is gradually increasing in practical applications.

Barium sulfate has multiple advantages, including strong chemical inertness, good stability, acid and alkali resistance, moderate hardness, high specific gravity, high whiteness, and absorption of harmful rays. Therefore, it is widely used in various fields, including plastics, rubber, coatings, high-grade ink, chemical, paper, ceramics, pigments and so on. The addition of barium sulfate can improve the hardness and strength of the product, enhance the heat resistance and wear resistance, and make it become one of the functional filling materials with broad development prospects.

The filler originally used for the production of PVC pipes/fittings is directly borrowed from the experience of the rubber industry, using barium sulfate. Therefore, to date, many PVC pipe/fitting manufacturers insist on using barium sulfate as a filler. According to industry practice to distinguish PVC pipe and pipe fittings, generally speaking, the linear, cylindrical shape used to build the pipe is called the pipe, and the transfer head used to connect the pipe is called the pipe. Because the structure of the pipe is much more complex than the pipe, the manufacturer who produces the pipe may not necessarily produce the pipe, because the production of the pipe requires higher process requirements and investment costs.

According to production experience, the barium sulfate powder used for the production of drainage pipes is usually between 325-1250 mesh, and the fineness of the barium sulfate powder selected depends on the specific needs of the pipes and the amount of addition. In general, when adding 200-300 barium sulfate powder, 400-600 purpose barium sulfate can be selected, and when adding less than 200 parts, 800-1250 purpose barium sulfate can be selected. In addition, in the manufacture of PVC irrigation pipes, superfine barium sulfate treated with 1250-1500 mesh can be used as a filler; For power pipes, 300-400 mesh of slightly lower grade barium sulfate can be used as a filler; In the production of threaded tubes, 1250-2500 purpose barium sulfate or modified barium sulfate can be used as a filler.

In the manufacturing process of pipe fittings, powder injection molding or injection molding after granulation can be used. In the selection of barium sulfate filler, you can decide according to the specific needs, choose to use nano-barium sulfate or modified barium sulfate. However, the specific choice should depend on the quality requirements of the pipe fitting manufacturing enterprise. At present, companies producing powder injection molded pipe fittings can choose modified barium sulfate or conventional barium sulfate to obtain good appearance and quality, which can usually meet the effect of light calcium. However, it is recommended to choose a superfine barium sulfate powder of more than 1250 mesh when trying to get better results.

Barium sulfate, simple production process, powder quality consistency is good, strong stability, stable water control. These basic conditions are conducive to the production process adjustment of downstream pipe enterprises. The most important thing is the low cost, which is a good choice for pipe companies.

Barite is a non-metallic mineral primarily composed of barium sulfate. It has a high density (4.3~4.5g/cm³) and relatively low Mohs hardness (3~3.5). It exhibits stable chemical properties, is insoluble in water and hydrochloric acid, non-toxic, non-magnetic, and has the ability to absorb X-rays and gamma rays.

1. Advantages of Barium Element Compounds in Radiation Shielding:

①Barium is positioned ahead of lead in the periodic table, and it is a non-radioactive element. It possesses a relatively high atomic mass, making it more likely to undergo the photoelectric effect when interacting with radiation, which is highly beneficial for preventing ionizing radiation. Additionally, barium ions have a high dielectric constant and strong magnetization, resulting in excellent magnetic loss properties when dealing with non-ionizing radiation. In comparison to some other radiation shielding materials (such as early lead-based X-ray shielding), barium has distinct advantages due to its superior performance and the avoidance of toxic lead oxide-related issues.

②Radiation shielding cements typically include barium cement and strontium cement. While strontium cement offers better protection against ionizing radiation, barium cement excels in shielding gamma rays and X-rays. Additionally, when used as additives in composite fiberboard materials, barite powder, zeolite powder, and magnetite powder all demonstrate some level of electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. Overall, in the low-frequency range (below 110 kHz), barite powder proves to be the most effective in electromagnetic shielding, achieving a shielding effectiveness of 17.99 dB. Zeolite powder follows with 17.71 dB, and magnetite powder provides slightly lower effectiveness at 16.99 dB. Therefore, barite powder stands out as the most superior option for electromagnetic shielding.

2. Research status of global Barite radiation protection application:

①Early, the Akkur research group of Demirel University in Turkey used barite as coarse and fine aggregate, and prepared three different types of barite concrete through different ratios, and the test results showed that barite as an aggregate showed excellent performance in shielding gamma rays.

②In addition, Günther et al. used the absorption properties of barium sulfate, barium titanate, and bismuth oxide to develop a composite fiber that can absorb X-rays. They made this fiber into yarns and fabrics, and succeeded in achieving efficient shielding against X-rays.

③Japan also proposed an innovative method, adding barium sulfate to viscose solution for spinning, and developed a new type of fiber. The X-ray shielding effect of the fabric made of this fiber is obvious, especially for 6kV and 2mA cathode X-ray sources, the shielding efficiency is as high as 97%.

3. Summary:

①The reason why barite can be used for radiation protection is that its main component is barium sulfate, in which barium has a high-quality nucleus, containing many atoms per unit volume, which increases the probability of photoelectric effect and other phenomena, so that it is easier to absorb the energy of rays. In addition, barium ion also has a high dielectric constant and strong magnetization characteristics, which makes it show excellent magnetic loss in the resistance to electromagnetic radiation.

②At present, the application of barite in radiation protection is mainly concrete materials in the construction industry, additives in medical protective clothing, and coatings as electronic signal shielding materials.
